Jimmy is a 3-D printed and open-source robot which in the Internet of Things (IoT) can be considered a Thing. Jimmy is a manifestation of what the future might look like when our lives are tightly interwoven with smart gadgets and smart spaces. Things will remind us of tasks we have forgotten to do. Things, such as Jimmy, a walking and talking robot, will do physical tasks for us as well. It is up to our imagination to tell Jimmy what he should do for us. Intel has envisioned such a future and has provided a perfect vehicle to design our own fully-personalized Thing. It’s the app store for Jimmy. Using the Intel® XDK developer kit, one can write apps for Jimmy and post them on the future app store for others to use. It will not be long before we print our own little assistant to bring to life by adding apps to its brain. Today, Jimmy is powered by Intel® processor technology. The Intel® XDK application development environment can be downloaded here. Intel XDK is easy to use, enables fast development and simple deployments. It provides a framework on which apps can be written just once, but can be easily published across many platforms.
App developers are able to create custom apps that run on smartphones and tablets to interact with Jimmy, using a socket connection to interact with Jimmy. The app architecture for Jimmy is as below.
